First, check that it is the Wi-Fi
Slow internet and weak Wi-Fi feel the same at a desk but have different fixes. A few quick checks tell them apart:
- Run a speed test while standing next to the router, then again at the problem desk. If both are slow, the internet line or the router is the likely cause.
- Plug a laptop into the router with a cable. If the wired speed is fine and the wireless speed is not, the problem is Wi-Fi coverage.
- Note whether one device or everyone is affected. One device points to that device; everyone points to the network.
Common causes
- The router sits in a closet, a corner, or a cabinet at one end of the office.
- Walls, concrete, elevators, mirrors, and metal shelving block or reflect the signal.
- One consumer router is trying to cover the whole office and every device in it.
- Neighboring offices crowd the same channels, especially on the 2.4 GHz band.
- Older laptops and phones connect slowly and slow the network down for everyone.
Fixes that work
- Move the router or access point to a central, high spot, out of cabinets.
- Replace a single router with several access points connected to the network by cable. This is the most reliable fix for offices.
- If cable runs are not possible, use a mesh system and place the units within good range of each other.
- Connect desktops, printers, and conference room equipment by cable, so they stop competing for Wi-Fi.
- Put guests on a separate network so their devices do not slow down staff.
- Update the router and access point firmware.
What to avoid
Cheap plug-in range extenders often make things worse. Many repeat the signal on the same radio they receive it on, which cuts speed for everything connected through them. Buying the most expensive router is not a fix either if it stays in the same closet.
When to get help
If the checks above point to coverage and moving equipment has not helped, an on-site look usually finds the cause quickly. We test the line, the router, and the problem spots, then fix it or recommend hardware that fits your space. Network setup for a home or small office is a flat $399.
